Pingyao was listed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997 and still houses 4,000 Chinese heritage houses in a private courtyard. Some of these houses were built during the Ming Dynasty between the 14th and 17th centuries.here is
According to the director of the China Heritage Program at the non-profit World Heritage Fund, Kuangan Lee, heritage houses, which feature a special courtyard called "siheyuan," mean "four-angle garden." Each house has a courtyard surrounded by four-sided walls.
"We can see the function of each of these houses in the way they are planned, and they provide a very clear idea of the history of families and how they live," Lee explains.

In most cases, these houses were divided into a basic family house, a dedicated servants' section, and a courtyard where horses were kept. The smaller courts were used as classrooms to teach children from each tribe. The size of the house symbolized the state and wealth of the family.
"When Pingyao was China's financial capital, it was a place for many business people and their big families," he says, "it was normal for someone to have seven or eight adjoining patios."
A decade ago, the World Heritage Fund began working with Pingyao Municipality to conserve the Old City. During that period, the Working Group noted the large number of houses with its own patios.
The number of homes is estimated at thousands in the historic city. However, most of them are owned by people and are not listed as protected, which means that the government has not provided any funding for their preservation.

Some of those homes were for rent, which meant they were in a bad condition and a place for low-income families that they were not able to maintain.
In 2012, the World Heritage Fund established a program for the protection of houses with yards, which could lead to the local government providing material and technical support to the homeowners.
Homeowners must provide proof of their own ownership of the house, and after that, the house is checked to determine its condition. If the house has been previously repaired or if it has been destroyed and rebuilt, it will not be eligible for support.

The budget allocated by the Government ranged from $ 60 to $ 210 for external restoration. Internal repairs are the responsibility of homeowners.
